What Is Shilajit?

Shilajit, known in Pakistan as salajeet or silajeet, is a dark, sticky substance that seeps out of rocks in high mountains during summer. Its Sanskrit name is often translated as "conqueror of the mountains." It has a long history in traditional medicine across Asia, and a scientific review describes it as a mix of humic acid, fulvic acid, dibenzo-α-pyrones and trace elements. Its composition differs by region.

What Is Aftabi Shilajit?

"Aftab" means sun. Aftabi shilajit is dried by sunlight, while atashi shilajit is cooked over fire. Traditional makers often prefer sunlight because it avoids strong direct heat. Ours is aftabi.

How Our Shilajit Is Collected and Processed

1. Collection: Raw shilajit is collected from rocks in the mountains of Gilgit-Baltistan, Hunza, Skardu and Chitral.

2. Breaking: It is broken into small pieces.

3. Dissolving: The pieces are put in water.

4. Sun processing: The container is covered with glass and kept in direct sunlight.

5. Settling: Stones and soil sink to the bottom.

6. Paste: The shilajit becomes a thick paste.

This is a traditional method that separates visible stones and soil. It is not a laboratory purification, and it cannot tell you anything about heavy metals, which only a lab test can measure.

What's Inside: Minerals and Nutrition

Shilajit is not a food with a fixed nutrition label, and each batch differs. What studies report:

• Fulvic acid and humic acid: the main organic parts. Fulvic acid is thought to be behind many of its effects.

• Dibenzo-α-pyrones: organic compounds studied for antioxidant activity.

• Minerals: One ICP-MS study found potassium most common, followed by magnesium, calcium, sodium, iron and aluminium. Zinc appears in smaller amounts in other work. The order changes with the source.

• Amino acids: A study of Pakistani silajit found lysine and alanine highest.

You may see "85 minerals" on other pages. That is a marketing line, and we found no peer-reviewed count, so we do not use it. The same kind of rock can also carry lead, arsenic or mercury, which is why the safety section below matters.

Benefits of Shilajit

Research is still limited, and many studies are small or test purified extracts, not resin like ours.

• Traditional tonic: Used for generations for general strength and wellbeing.

• Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity: Reported in laboratory and animal studies in the review above.

• Hormone study: In one randomised trial, 75 men aged 45 to 55 took a branded purified extract (250 mg twice daily, 90 days) and had about 20% higher testosterone than the placebo group. Results cannot be assumed for other shilajit products.

How to Use Aftabi Shilajit

1. Start small. Use half the measuring spoon. Studies used 250 to 500 mg a day, but those were purified extracts, so ask your doctor about your own amount.

2. Dissolve it. Stir into warm (not boiling) water or milk until it dissolves.

3. Take it after food, often in the morning, as stomach upset is a reported side effect.

4. Stop and see a doctor if you get nausea, dizziness, headache, rash or stomach pain.

5. Store it in a cool, dry place with the lid closed, and use a clean, dry spoon.

Long-term safety data is limited, so ask your doctor how long to use it. One full spoon a day makes a 20g pack last about 40 days, and half a spoon about 80.

Who Should Not Use Shilajit

Avoid it, or use it only on a doctor's advice, if you:

• are giving it to children or teenagers
